WELCOME TO TACANA

From our community to yours.

We are a cooperative of more than 150 local coffee producers, working to create quality coffee, protect our forests and improve the overall well-being of our communities.

Our coffee is produced by coffee growers from 13 communities that mostly belong to the Mame ethnic group, in the municipalities of Cacahuatán and Unión Juárez in Chiapas, Mexico. We are located within the Tacaná volcano biosphere reserve, a protected natural area of great environmental and cultural importance along the border of Mexico and Guatemala.

Our coffee plantations are located on the slopes of the Tacaná volcano at a height that ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level. The production of our coffee is primarily of the Arabica variety.

OUR MISSION AND VISION

M: To offer our customers high quality, organic, and sustainably-sourced coffee, complying with national and international standards, both in the cultivation and in the production process. And above all, to continue caring for and protecting the Biosphere Reserve where we live.

V: To be a model organization for small coffee producers in Mexico, improving the income and quality of life of our families, all whilst conserving the forests that surround us and provide us with the resources for coffee production.

HISTORY

Our Start

Coffee production has distinguished itself in our region for many years. Before becoming a cooperative, many of us sold the coffee fruit to different buyers without any price regulation and many times without a fair payment for our work.
In 2015, we began to organize as a group and with the support of some allies, we managed to legally establish ourselves on September 16, 2016.
We are driven by the pursuit to sell coffee at a fair price while simultaneously promoting the product’s quality, emphasizing its cultivation and artisan production. Located in the Tacaná Natural Reserve, we are proud of the biodiversity and the cultural heritage that our product represents. This combination allows us to sustainably harness the natural resources of the place we call home, resulting in rich-flavored coffee whose quality can compete worldwide.

A VOLCANO OF FIRE AND COFFEE

For more than 20 years, the Tacaná volcano “House of fire” in the Mame language, was declared a Natural Reserve by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) of Mexico.
The coffee communities that inhabit the house of fire are committed to the conservation of this iconic volcano of the Southern Border.
The Tacaná is an active volcano 4070 meters above sea level, located on the border of Mexico and Guatemala. The cloud forest, the tropical pine-oak forests and the high moorlands give the Volcano an extraordinary scenic beauty. It is considered one of the most biodiverse areas in the country, in its forests there are 12 endangered species of birds, including the quetzal and other species such as the anteaters and the tigrillo.

COFFEE BEAN SHELL

We believe in the properties and quality of all our crops, including the husks of the coffee fruit that are separated from the beans. In addition, by marketing this product, we ensure the benefit of all coffee derivatives without waste.
The coffee husk is a product that has gained interest from consumers worldwide for its flavor and great antioxidant properties.
It is normally used for the preparation of infusions and its flavor has notes of vanilla, cherry and wood. As the peel-water ratio increases, the flavor changes to more fruity notes such as strawberry, blackberry or even cocoa.

SOCIAL IMPACT

One of our main objectives is to generate fair income for the producers, thus improving the livelihoods of the communities in the region. Our business is transparent and traceable to our clients and their consumers with a fair and sustainable scheme.

When consuming our coffee, income is divided as follows:

  • 90% is paid to the producer.

  • 4% Technical Assistance - Training for best environmental practices and quality guidelines.

  • 4% Equipment and infrastructure -Coffee nurseries, sieves for drying, etc.

  • 2% Social health and safety benefits to our members and community support.
